TREATMENT SERVICES FOR COUPLES

New love is the brightest, and long love is the greatest;

but revived love is the tenderest thing on earth.

I also provide psychological treatment services to couples who are experiencing problems in their relationship.  Marital psychotherapy differs from traditional individual psychotherapy in that that the focus of treatment is on the nature, role, and influence of an individual’s primary interpersonal relationships as they relate to the experience and display of psychological and emotional problems.  Research has shown that the quality and nature of an individual’s primary relationships has a substantial influence on both psychological and physical health.  Marital therapy takes a holistic perspective by identifying patterns of behavior and interaction between individuals that may be causing or maintaining psychological symptoms.  Thus, in marital therapy, the unit of treatment is not the individual—it is the interpersonal relationships within the marital/couple system in which an individual lives.

Research over the past several decades has shown that marital therapy is as effective, and in some cases more effective, than standard and/or individual treatments for treating a wide array of mental and psychological disorders such as: anxiety disorders, mood disorders, alcoholism and drug abuse, behavior disorders in children and adolescents, eating disorders, and, of course, marital distress and family conflict.

Marital therapy tends to be brief, solution-focused, and has specific treatment goals.  Many cases are terminated by 12 sessions, approximately 65% of cases are completed within 20 sessions, and about 88% of cases are completed within 50 sessions.  Marital therapy often requires less time and resources than the average individuated treatment.

Research
also shows that patients are highly satisfied with marital therapy services.  Patients report a marked improvement in work productivity, co-worker relationships, family relationships, partner relationships, emotional health, overall health, social life, and community involvement.  A majority of consumers report an improvement in their functioning at work, and over three-fourths of those receiving marital/couples or family therapy report an improvement in the couple relationship.
